Some research suggests that cats have been domesticated for over 4,000 years (dating back to ancient Egypt, of course.) Despite their long-standing history of a devout relationship with us humans, there are still both mysteries of cats we'll probably never truly understand, and plenty of humans who take in their first cat and are blown away by the purr-sonalities that come roaring out of these furry little felines. 

Before I took in my very own cat I certainly had plenty of preconceived notions that were almost all entirely untrue. Cats are incredible companions and an endless source of love and entertainment. Surely of all the creatures, humans keep as companions, none are as amusing as cats or as surprising!

Over time, all of us cat lovers come to realize these truths about cats, and we love them all the more because of each and every quirk.

1. First, let's get one thing straight.

You do NOT adopt the cat. The cat adopts you. You were chosen. You were blessed. Congratulations!

2. Photo game strong.

From the moment you bring them home and ever after you will find yourself unable to resist the urge to photograph every little detail and activity. This is why they are your babies.

3. Naughty, naughty!

But at least half the time you poise to take an adorable photo you'll end up capturing your cat being incredibly naughty.

4. To trust or not to trust, that is the question.

They have a tendency to give you this look that just screams, "I don't know if I trust you right now or not."

5. Can't stand the cute

If you own a glass table, the cutest thing you'll ever see is your cat laying on it. Just sneak below and look up for adorable purr-fection.

6. The staring.

Also known as the Blep, cats stare into the void, questioning existence or experiencing it? We aren't sure but it looks fun.

7. For entertainment purposes

Cats do lots of weird things for fun. Like staring at walls. So much fun.

8. Road trips are adventures.

Whether you're taking them to the vet or just out and about, it's not easy to drive with them. They don't much care for carriers and they never want to not be near you in the vehicle. Good luck, though.

9. They'll be there.

Particularly the moment you grab your laptop or open a book... or magazine, or put anything what-so-ever in your lap.

10. Traveling

If the suitcase exists, your cat wants to sit in it. If your cat thinks you're preparing to travel, your cat expects to go with. Tis the way of the cat.

11. Wondering if your cat is angry?

Check the pupils. Brightly lit room or not, if those pupils are dilated then your catto is mad. Probably at you for food-related issues.

12. Closed doors are not a cat's best friend.

Whatever going on in the next room is your cat's top priority. You will discover this to be especially true if you live in an apartment because the hallway is just an unexplored room to your cat.

13. They get fat... FAST.

But this tends to amplify their adorable factor. Still, we encourage you to try to keep your cats healthy and fit!

14. Oh, you wanted to do chores?

Your cat is displeased. Either with the task itself or simply how you're deciding to do it. Kitty judges.

15. The only thing better than a full bowl of food...

Is your food.

16. Your cat loves toilet paper.

It's universal.

17. Did you *really* lose your cat?

Probably not, she is probably just chilling in an unusual spot.

18. Your cat is confused

Primarily about his own size. He thinks he is smaller than he is.

19. The nutritional conspiracy.

If you haven't already figured it out, you and you cat will have very different ideas about whether or not your cat is hungry and whether or not they have "enough" food in their bowl. Good luck.
