According to him, he's been out in the country visiting his parents because his dad had knee surgery and his mother has a broken foot. So he helps them run errands.

The OP's parents retire by 6, which leaves him with 6 hours to kill with nothing but his old room, the internet, copious amounts of wine, and a snowy country landscape to wander around in.
