A 27-year-old had the perfect solution for an overstaying house guest. OP banned her sister-in-law from visiting their new home after she stayed 53 days in total since they moved in four months ago.

OP and her husband have been together for 10 years, married for one. Although OP is acquainted with most of her husband's family, she maintains an aloof relationship with his sister.

They do not have a lot of common interests. While OP and her husband prioritized their careers and education, his sister found contentment with marrying early and forgoing a college diploma.

OP does not have a high opinion of her SIL. She called her a brat who was spoiled rotten by her parents — they paid for her 120-guest, 3-day destination wedding in Italy.

Her SIL's animosity was reserved for OP. She didn't hide her adoration about OP's New York house at the housewarming.

Most of their guests loved the house, but her SIL gushed about it. She declared that she would store her daughter's stuff in their guest room because it would be too cumbersome to bring when they visit.

She said OP and her husband had too much space anyway. OP couldn't understand why her SIL, who lived in New Mexico, would store her daughter's things in their house, so OP declined.

She told her SIL their guest room was not free and that there wasn't enough space for her to store her daughter's things.

Since then, her SIL has darkened their halls for a total of 53 days. She visited unannounced. Her excuses were she was just in the neighborhood or was visiting a friend.

OP soon realized that her SIL put up framed photos of her in their guest room and was redecorating it. OP's husband said she was overthinking, and his sister was probably trying to befriend her.

During her last visit, OP collected the things her SIL left behind and had them shipped to New Mexico. Her SIL got upset and yelled at OP. OP told her she was banned from visiting their house.

Her SIL told everyone in the family about the ban. OP told everyone who contacted her in defense of her SIL to offer their home for her to live in instead.

OP explained that her unemployed SIL lived a cushy life in her parent's 5-bedroom townhouse. She didn't frequent their house because she was running away from an abusive situation — she just "loved the idea of living in New York."

OP needs to make sure her husband stays firm on their boundaries. His response of either his sister stopping the guest room shenanigans or she would be banned didn't match what OP said.

Maybe OP isn't the only one who needs a break from her SIL.

What was her SIL's goal with her unplanned (LOL) visits and guest room redecoration?

Did she think if she moved enough of her and her daughter's stuff that OP and her husband would have no other choice but to let them move in?

I guess this is how people behave when they've never heard "No" their entire life.

OP did a great job ending her SIL's plan before it got too far. If she didn't, they probably would have been roommates by now.

Her SIL's entitlement and boldness were on an entirely different level. She thought she could move into OP's house if she stored enough stuff and peppered random photos of herself in their guest room.
