Weddings are supposed to be joyous occasions. In reality, they turn into drama fests that bring out the worst in some couples and their families.
A couple almost ended their wedding preparations without drama, if not for a recent argument with the groom's mother. The groom's parents divorced when he was seven years old.
It was mainly because of his dad's affair, but OP was aware his parents didn't really love each other. They were pressured to get married by their parents.
OP's dad eventually married his affair partner, Emma, and she was an incredible stepmother to him growing up. His mom got remarried to Owen a few years later.
While OP and Emma had a great relationship, Owen didn't put in the effort to connect with him emotionally. OP can see, however, that Owen was a great partner to his mom.
Still, he preferred to spend most of his time living with his dad and Emma. His mom wasn't bothered by OP's choice and made sure to spend time with him during weekends to do fun activities.
OP's dynamic with both sets of parents came into play when he got engaged to Kate. His fiancée has a casual relationship with his mom but an incredible relationship with Emma.
OP's mom is a wedding planner, but his fiancée relied on Emma heavily for their wedding preparations
u/Ok-Initial-6856OP's mom didn't have a problem with this except when it came to the dress she will wear during the ceremony
u/Ok-Initial-6856Kate made the mistake of telling OP's mom that Emma and her own mother already chose the color of the dresses they will be wearing
u/Ok-Initial-6856OP's mom snapped at his fiancée and tried to appeal to OP. She said it was unfair because OP was basically choosing his dad's affair partner all over again.
u/Ok-Initial-6856She said it was more difficult for her to bond with OP back then because she was a single mom. OP pointed out to her mom that she is not a single mom since she has a husband. They couldn't compromise before his mom's husband told the couple to stay away from his wife.
u/Ok-Initial-6856The top comment accused OP's mom of being a narcissistic parent which is ironic because she wasn't that involved in his life as much as his dad and stepmom were
PandasrthebestThey advised OP to stay away from the drama and focus on wedding planning with Kate
SeeMeImhereIf his mom continues to create issues, OP should consider rescinding her invite
SeeMeImhereOthers challenged OP to reonsider his perspective on his parents' divorce. He should find out how his mom truly felt during the aftermath of his dad's affair.
prairiemountainzenBut calling his fiancée a b*tch was indeed out of line
prairiemountainzenSome pointed out that Kate might not be completely innocent
AilingHen69Unless, of course, she's taking cues from how OP treats his parents and their spouses
prairiemountainzenRedditors can't help but emphatize with OP's mom who had to suffer through a lot of things silently. They encouraged OP to really talk to his mom and maybe see her side of things for once.
professor-professorIf this problem was purely about the dress, it is understandable why OP's mom felt slighted. She was basically given scraps no one else wanted.
Iforgotmypassword126The color of the dress alone could be enough to make anyone feel bad about themselves as yellow is hard color to pull off
prairiescary, Equivalent_Method509OP and his mom are long overdue for a heart-to-heart talk. It seems as if OP never really gave his mom's feelings a lot of thought because he was enamored by the attention given by his father's new wife.
He was young, but he is an adult now. His mom deserves more understanding from OP and a little less adversity based on a one-sided prerogative.
