Humans have a special bond with dogs that goes back way back. It's a bit like a friendship that's stood the test of time.

That's why we feel a responsibility to defend them. Our beloved canines are incredibly loyal, loving, and trusting.

They rely on us for their well-being, just like friends who depend on each other. We share our homes and our hearts with them, and in return, they give us unconditional love and companionship.

Because of this close relationship, we want to make sure they're safe and happy. When we see a dog being mistreated, it doesn't feel right because it's like a friend in need.

However, there's a sad truth we must face – there are moments when they endure mistreatment from those who should be their protectors. Imagine you're out and about, and you witness someone treating a dog poorly.

It's a moment that touches not just your heart but your sense of responsibility as well. Over at Quora, a discussion about handling dog mistreatment started.

Dog lovers are more than willing to confront the animal abuser to save poor canines who deserve nothing but love. Let's take a look at the answers and see how other people would handle the situation.

A Quora user asks: "What would you do if you saw someone kicking and yelling at their dog?"

Young one defends a poor poodle.

My 8 year old grand went to a friends house after school. They walked in to her stepbrother and stepdad yelling at, hitting and kicking her poodle.

My grand picked the dog up, said “this is my birthday present”, and walked out with him. Brave kid!

My daughter couldn’t keep the 3 year old dog, so I took him. He passed last year at 19 years old; I was devastated.

Every dog/pet I’ve ever shared my life with has been a rescue/stray/abandoned . I’ve reported animal abuse/cruelty.

I’ve seen abusers prosecuted and convicted; they were banned from owning or “caring for” any animals for life…after release from jail/prison …and I wholeheartedly agree.

Others chose to involve the authorities.

Once when we were out camping I saw a young man beating his young Pitbull with a water hose. I stepped between he and his dog and I told him that if he hit the dog again I would call the police.

I did call the local authorities and reported it. They sent an officer out and talked to the man and took the dog.

To me saving a dog would be just like saving a child. What would you do if you saw someone kicking and yelling at their child?

Most people would report it to the police, especially if the dog abuser will get fined.

Take the dog away…Also film it for the police. There is a $5:000 fine in my state

This person would not only involve the authorities, they'll confront the dog abuser too!

I would call 911, start filming, and yell at them!-----

Last summer I was looking out my kitchen window and I could see a man in the neighborhood behind us bring his leg back and kick his small dog! I jumped in my car and drove over there as fast as I could and as I was turning the corner he was going to do it again 😱 but from that angle I could see he was kicking a ball and the dog was chasing after it😳 I’m glad I saw that or I’m not sure what I would have said or done🙄

For some people, confronting the owner is the best course of action.

I would go over to them and tell them just what I thought about them and probably end up in a confrontation, but it would be worth it .

For starters I’d tell them to stop it and as the situation warrants take it from there.

For other people, there's no other choice but to yell.

Yelling - there’s nothing you can do, other than try to educate the person.

Kicking? That’s cruelty to an animal, and it’s illegal in almost every civilized country. I’d report that.

(Seriously kicking? I’d call 911 and ask for an assist. Trying to arrest the guy would be dangerous if I wasn’t armed, which I most likely wouldn’t be - I don’t walk around showing off my “gunz”.

When we come across a situation where a dog is being mistreated, our natural instinct is to intervene and protect our four-legged friends. Whether it's firmly speaking up against the abuser, calmly but firmly letting them know that their actions are unacceptable, or calling the authorities for help, the most important thing is to take action.
