The World May Run Out of Chocolate in 30 Years and You Won't Believe Why

Could you imagine a world without chocolate? It sounds like a terrifying and lonely place, doesn't it?

Well, experts are saying that the world could run out of chocolate in 30 years. The wonderful cacao plants that provide the miracle that is chocolate are facing the struggle to survive due to the increase in weather changes, especially in warmer climates.

These trees can only survive in specific conditions, including a great deal of rain and humidity.

Because of these specific conditions, the plants can only grow and thrive in a very specific area- namely in a narrow belt about 10 degrees North or South of the equator and in tropical climates like Asia and Africa.

Last year, a research project entitled "Destruction by Chocolate" discussed that if temperatures rise by merely 2.1 degrees Celcius within the next 30 years, these plants would face a great deal of struggle and would not be able to stay alive. Due to the increasing problem of global warming, that scenario is more likely than not.

This means that there will be absolutely no real chocolate on this planet.

These higher temperatures will also result in less water retention in the soil which means that areas in which these plants are currently being farmed currently will become much too arid for the plants to survive. This poses a great dilemma for countries, such as Ghana, to decide whether or not to move their production of these plants into more moisture rich areas by 2050. This move could potentially ruin what is currently a very carefully preserved and treasured nature preserve. So begins the battle of preserving chocolate or ecosystems.

As the demand for chocolate rises, supply is struggling to meet that demand, due to production methods that are completely outdated. Doug Hawkins, who is a representative from Hardman Agribusiness notes that cacao production hasn't been able to change for a great deal of time, almost 100 years in fact.
