Redditor Gets Into Heated Argument With Wife After Encouraging Their Son To Install A Door Lock To Prevent Her Constant Intrusions
Privacy is often a delicate and sometimes confusing topic for parents. This is because they often find it hard to balance the need to watch over their kids with giving them adequate privacy.

However, as children grow older, they need more privacy and personal space to explore new ideas, interests, and emotions. Parents must give their children adequate privacy to do these to support their growing independence.
Giving a child privacy may include simple acts like knocking before entering their room, asking them for permission to stay during a doctor’s visit, giving them space to talk to their friends alone, and many more.
We found a story on the AITA subreddit highlighting the issue of privacy.
OP shared that their son had recently moved out of the room he shared with his brother. Since he moved out, he had been complaining about his mother barging into the room without knocking.
After trying to explain his need for privacy to his mother, without any change occurring, he approached OP and reported this to them; OP then spoke to their wife about this.
However, her stance on the situation didn’t change, so OP threatened that if she repeated entering their son’s room without knocking, he would get a lock for his room.
OP’s wife did it again that same day, and their son got a lock. When she discovered the change, she got upset and stopped talking to Op and their son. This led OP to ask the AITA question.

Let's dig into the details
OP's son has been complaining that his mom constantly barges into his room without knocking
OP tried to relay their son's displeasure to her, but she didn't see the sense in knocking in her own house
Their son ended up getting a lock for his room after OP gave him the green light. Now OP's wife is not only furious, but she has decided to give OP the silent treatment till the lock is removed
Here's what the Reddit community had to say about this story:
"There are reasonable things that one does in private that even a mother does not need to know about, much less see."
"It's unreasonable to put up a fight against someone who's telling you just to knock before entering their private space"
"Why does your wife have such a strong desire to see your son j**king it?"
"Would she be okay with your son just barging into your room while she’s changing or sleeping?"
"If it was a 16 year old girl and her father was doing it, it’d be considered weird and wrong"
"What specifically is she looking for? Poor kid."
Several commenters believe OP is NTA. They can’t seem to understand OP’s wife’s refusal to knock before entering their son’s room, as they believe he deserves a little privacy.
Her decision to give OP the silent treatment might also prove ineffective. As OP has said, they have no intention of removing the lock anytime soon.
