Redditor Refuses To Let His GF Get A Dog Because His Senior Cat Has Always Hated Them

Adding a new member to the family by adopting a new pet is always a welcomed idea. Your old pet earns a new friend that way, and the family grows even bigger and stronger. 

However, before doing so, it's important to check how your current pet will feel about the new addition to the family. If the two pets don't get along, chaos will reign all over the household, and both pets are not going to be comfortable in their own home. 

Some pet owners do the introduction step by step to make it easier for the two pets and to avoid any potential clashes. The pets eventually become best friends, but it's not always the case.

A Redditor who goes by the username u/Sparkys_Human made a post on the r/AmItheA**hole subReddit where he explained how he refused to let his GF get a dog because his cat hates them. The user felt unsure about his decision, so he decided to consult with the Reddit community and received a lot of interesting reactions to his post.

OP knows his cat won't be comfortable around a dog, but his family encouraged him to get one.

OP modified the post to pay the cat tax and included a link with a picture of his cat.

Randomly getting a dog would be a terrible idea.

The cat deserves to override the GF's dog desires.

Old cats can be grumpy sometimes.

Sparky also growls at people he doesn't like.

OP needs to have a deeper conversation with his GF

"Everyone who lives in the house gets veto power on any new pet being added to the house."

It wouldn't be fair to the hypothetical puppy either.

At that age, he has already decided that he doesn't like dogs.

The girlfriend sounds naïve about it all.

OP's GF had a dog when she was younger.

That statement can be used vice versa. Now is not the right time.

OP's responsibility is to his cat, not some hypothetical dog.

The cat could live another 6 years, and that's a long time.

OP's girlfriend needs to be patient.

Op's GF has always wanted a dog.

OP has every right to protect his cat from the stress and discomfort a new puppy can cause. The girlfriend needs to have some patience, and they will eventually get a puppy after the cat is no longer with us.
