Movies are famous for transporting people into different realities. In fact, this is the only reason why some people watch them. 

After all, who doesn't like a little escape from reality? Sometimes, however, these realities are so sad or so beautiful that you can't help but tear up even a little. 

Picture this, you're watching a movie, and you have totally fallen in love with a character, and then something terrible happens to that character. At that moment, you forget they are just an actor as that character has become part of your reality — you begin to feel what they feel and even place yourself in that same situation. 

At this point, it's not just a movie; it's someone's real-life experience. So much so that you find yourself going through boxes of tissues even when you know that what's happening right in front of you results from someone else's imagination. 

Interestingly, there's a science to all this. When we cry during movies, it is usually a function of our mirror neurons. 

These neurons help us feel what another person is feeling even though these events take place outside ourselves. In other words, your brain cells react both when a particular action is performed and when it is only observed.

The first dance scene really hit hard because my first dance didn’t happen the way I wanted. Eventually I decided to walk away from my marriage as it wasn’t making me happy and to see the exact emotions and conversations play out on screen really caught me off guard. That film was therapy for the soul.
