In general, an animal shelter would be thrilled to learn about neglected animals so that they could quickly offer aid and support. However, the rescue team in today's story was alarmed by what they discovered when they found the animals.

The RSPCA was called and told about a group of rabbits that required assistance and suitable care. The rescue crew expected to assist a few cute bunnies, but they were shocked to discover 47 big animals living in a small, filthy space.

The largest of the rabbits might have been the size of a Jack Russell Terrier dog. The rabbits were Flemish giants, the largest domestic breed in the world.

The space in the cage where those large animals were housed was insufficient for their daily activities. Additionally, they were denied access to adequate sanitary and medical treatment.

They were taken to a veterinary facility by the rescuers for examinations and assessments. Except for one fluffy giant who had vision issues and a wound behind his neck, the majority of the other fluffy giants were healthy.

Trevor Walker, an inspector with the RSPCA said:

“These poor rabbits were living in cramped and dirty conditions which would have been very unpleasant for them, especially in the heat. Luckily a vet found they are all in good condition — one is on medication for weepy eyes and a wound on the back of his neck.”

The RSPCA provided all the bunnies with loving care until they were in optimum shape. The RSPCA wanted to place them with good owners in permanent homes where they could lead happy lives.

The Flemish giants were renowned for being placid and tolerant, despite their enormous size. As a result, the shelter felt confident that the bunnies would make excellent pets.

Walker says that they hope they'll find loving homes. “They will make good companion animals with a nice temperament.”
