He even calls his wife small-minded and harsh.
Mothers are generally warned by doctors about the risks that come with gestational diabetes. That's why an online community refuses to side with a Redditor whose mother is clearly sabotaging his wife's diet.
Over at the "Am I The A**hole?" (AITA) subreddit, a husband wanted the community to judge him over his reaction toward his pregnant wife with gestational diabetes. According to the original poster (OP), they are visiting his family abroad and they are from a rice-eating culture.
His wife has specific dietary requirements to manage her blood sugar levels, including substituting white rice with alternative rice. The OP’s mother takes charge of the meals and usually buys and prepares the alternative rice for his wife.
One day, the mother mentioned that she gets half a kilo of alternative rice so everyone can eat it together, implying it’s easier than cooking separately. The OP’s wife took offense, interpreting the comment as a slight against her.
The OP, frustrated over her wife's perception, called her small-minded and accused her of hating his mother. Their argument was worsened by past incidents where OP's mother added sugar to the wife’s breakfast porridge and paired alternative rice with unhealthy sides, making the wife believe that the mother was intentionally sabotaging her diet.
He, however, thinks these actions are dumb but not malicious. After OP stressed the importance of the dietary requirements, his mother corrected her actions, and his wife's blood sugar levels improved.
This convinced his wife that the previous issues were intentional, while the OP remains unsure if he communicated the requirements clearly enough.
And yet, she served meals unsuitable for the OP's wife. This made the wife think that there's a malicious intent from her MIL.
It's clear that his mother is sabotaging the diet. He just refuses to believe it because it's his mom
When people have a certain physical condition, it's always best to ask them what to serve to ensure that dietary requirements are met. The OP's mom is a huge a-hole for not bothering to clarify what's suitable for DIL's diet.
This lack of consideration not only jeopardizes the wife's health but also creates unnecessary drama within the family. The OP should've been more understanding toward his wife.
