Monkeys are so amusing. And they do it with such ease and grace that they make us think it's in their nature to goof around constantly. This can sometimes can give us the wrong impression about them. They are not clowns but highly intelligent animals that can communicate, use tools, and even learn sign language.

Monkeys and apes are incredibly smart animals with a great sense of humor (for lack of a better word). They work hard, take excellent care of their families, and act protective of their groups. But when they kick back and want to have some fun – they go all the way.

Maybe we find them fascinating and hilarious because we are closely related. We are all primates. The order includes humans, apes, monkeys, and prosimians – around 230 to 270 different species.

Here is an interesting trivia. Most people think monkeys and apes are the same and use terms interchangeably but they are not.

They are both members of the primate group but different species. So how can you distinguish them? Well, it’s the tail.

Almost all monkeys have tails; apes do not. Their bodies are different in other ways, too: monkeys are usually smaller and narrow-chested, while apes are bigger and have broad chests and shoulder joints that allow them to swing through trees (some monkeys also have this ability, most of them are built for running across branches rather than swinging).
