Humans are wired to show empathy for living beings. It's a complex emotion that allows us to relate to what others are going through.

So it can be surprising and heartwarming when we see animals showing empathy for other species. For instance, a group of experts in Monterey Bay, California saw some humpback whales keeping a pod of killer whales (orcas) at bay to protect a gray whale.

Since the prevalent rule of the animal kingdom is "survival of the fittest," these creatures will likely do what's beneficial for them. Even if scientists will argue that the humpbacks may have mistaken it as one of their own, they cannot explain why it has been protecting it for hours.

So there must be more to it. Marine mammals are not the only ones capable of altruism.

We've also seen animals adopting others that don't belong to their kind. According to Unlikely Friendships author Jenny Holland, adoptions can easily be seen in domestic animals.

While it does happen in the wild, the instances are infrequent. Today, we're looking at the selflessness of not an adult, but a baby monkey.

The video doesn't reveal how these creatures met each other.

But you can clearly see that a close bond has been formed between the two species. The ducklings circle around the monkey, treating him as if he were their mom.

The baby monkey reciprocates by hugging the little ones.

The monkey and the ducklings do a lot of things together.

During their mealtime, the baby monkey was fed with a bottle of milk while the ducklings ate rice. The latter gladly shared their meal with the former.
