‘Chicken Jockey’ Trend Takes Off After Minecraft Movie Reveal, But Not Everyone’s Happy

Cinema-goers around the world have been issued a firm warning after an unusual and disruptive trend, inspired by the new Minecraft movie, began causing chaos in theaters globally.

The film, officially titled A Minecraft Movie, premiered on April 4 and has quickly become a major talking point. Featuring an all-star cast including Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Jack Black (School of Rock), and Jennifer Coolidge (The White Lotus), the movie blends action, comedy, and nostalgia, drawing in fans from all corners of the gaming and film communities.

One unexpected breakout star of the film is the "Chicken Jockey," a rare and beloved character from the Minecraft universe. In the game, a chicken jockey is created when a baby zombie spawns while riding a chicken. Though it is considered a rare occurrence in gameplay, the quirky combo has long held cult status among Minecraft fans.

This fandom has now spilled over into real life. A particular moment in the film, featured in the trailer released last month, shows Jack Black's character spotting the bizarre creature and shouting, "Chicken jockey!" Since the movie’s release, that scene has triggered intense reactions in cinemas, with fans cheering, yelling, throwing popcorn, and even chanting along during screenings.

Clips showing these crowd reactions have gone viral on social media, with posts capturing packed theaters erupting in laughter and noise. While many view it as a fun celebration of the film and the game, some cinemas have started issuing warnings, asking moviegoers to respect other viewers by keeping their enthusiasm under control.

It is unclear whether the trend will fade or continue to grow, but for now, cinema staff are staying alert. The excitement surrounding A Minecraft Movie has proven that the blocky world still holds a powerful grip on fans of all ages, even if it means a few popcorn-covered theater floors along the way.

The whole thing is undeniably strange.

Still, some viewers are clearly loving the chaos. One person shared their experience, writing: "My theatre clapped every time Jack Black name dropped a Minecraft item that was in the trailers, and when he said Chicken Jockey I s*** you not the entire row in front of me gave a standing ovation."

Another echoed the excitement, saying: "Just got back from watching the movie myself, can confirm everyone in the theatre collectively yelled 'CHICKEN JOCKEY' during that moment and it was glorious ngl."

Not everyone is amused by the trend, with some expressing serious frustration over the behavior in cinemas.

One critic shared their experience, stating: "I’m a theatre employee: by throwing water, popcorn and all that onto people (which many have been doing) y'all are making our jobs harder."
Another moviegoer, who also works in a theater, issued a plea: "Theatre employee here. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE just don’t be obnoxious I worked both opening days and it has been a living nightmare. Nothing wrong with cheering during big moments but don’t be swearing."

The trend has gained so much momentum that cinemas are now stepping in with official warnings, urging audiences to dial back their reactions to the now-viral 'chicken jockey' moment.

A spokesperson for REEL Cinema in Fareham addressed the issue in a statement to the Daily Echo, saying:

"To ensure everyone has the best possible cinema experience, we’re increasing our monitoring of screens during performances.
"Disruptive behaviour, including taking part in TikTok trends, before, during, or after a screening will not be tolerated.
"Anyone causing disruption will be asked to leave, and where necessary, the police will be called."

Meanwhile, Witney Cineworld has echoed the growing concerns, making it clear that disruptive behavior won’t be tolerated.

A spokesperson stated: "Any form of antisocial behaviour, especially anything that may disturb other guests such as loud screaming, clapping and shouting will not be tolerated. Anyone who is found to be acting in this manner will be removed from the screening and not entitled to a refund.”
Radway Cinemas in Sidmouth also issued a warning via social media, writing: "Anyone found taking part in the current social media trend involving A Minecraft Movie will be removed from the cinema. We wish for our customers to enjoy the experience they have paid for."
