Getting a dog, or any pet for that matter is a big responsibility. It is not a gadget you can turn off and put on a shelf when you get bored.
Pets are living, breathing creatures that require constant care. And we are not talking about just feeding them and giving them a warm and dry place to sleep. Nope.
Owning a pet implies much more, especially if it is a dog. Namely, they need quality time with you.
And some breeds need your companionship more than others (velcro breeds). If you are willing to provide all that, you are ready to have a dog.
You just need to clear it with people in your household. But, do you need to get permission from your parents when you don’t live with them and are totally independent financially?
One Redditor has such a problem.
He says: “I told my parents I got a dog and they got very angry at me. I take good care of the dog I go out with him, buy him food, teach him, play with him, etc. When I told them about it they got furious basically treating me like a child about it saying I'm irresponsible and won't have enough time for it. “
What’s weird about this? Well, the fact that OP is completely independent:
“I'm a 22 M and have my own apartment that I share with my bf 18M. Currently, I'm a student and I work part-time as a waiter. In general, since it's my 3rd year at uni and I usually work 3 days a week for 6 hours I have quite a bit of time on my hands the pay from my job is very good as well making roughly 2x the minimum wage with half the hours.”
So, what’s the parent’s problem in all this? Read on:
OP asks:
RedditOP lives in an apartment with his boyfriend, and he is a student. However, he has a good paying part-time job and doesn't depend on his parents.
RedditHe told his parents he got a dog, and they got furious. His brother joined them in criticizing his decision.
RedditOP doesn't understand why they are angry because it doesn't affect them at all. He has enough time for the dog
RedditNow he asks the Redditors if he is right
RedditRedditors agree:
RedditOP should stop sharing things with his family
RedditThey sound toxic
RedditOP is not surprised by his parents' actions, but he didn't expect that from his brother
RedditInfo diet could be a good thing
RedditTheir views are not important here
RedditOP says he never dropped anything
RedditOne Redditor shared her experience:
RedditSadly, the dog passed away, but they have wonderful memories
RedditHome, work, decent salary... these things make OP independent
RedditHaving a dog is like having a child, but OP can manage it
RedditIt is his home and his life
RedditIgnore the parents
RedditHis decision doesn't require any effort on their part
RedditSomeone asked, but OP already answered it before
RedditThe bottom line is:
RedditWhat do parents have to do with OP’s decision to get a dog? He is a completely independent person and his dog doesn’t require any involvement on their part.
He works and goes to college and is clearly a very responsible person. But it seems they are used to criticizing him, and they just jump at any opportunity.
