Venturing into nature can often unveil unexpected surprises, turning what seemed like a tranquil outing into a heart-pounding adventure. This was the case for Shala Holm and her daughter Avery during a leisurely fishing trip on the Mississippi River near Brainerd, Minnesota.

As they peacefully cast their lines from their kayak, a sudden disturbance beneath the water's surface jolted them from their calm. Their senses heightened, and they soon found themselves face to face with an unexpected visitor: a colossal creature emerging from the depths.

When it gets cold, they hibernate, burying themselves in mud at the bottom of their habitats to stay warm through the winter. They eat almost anything they can find in the water, including plants, fish, smaller turtles, frogs, and even small mammals.

Though they might look a bit scary and have a reputation for being fierce, snapping turtles play a crucial role in their environment. They help keep other aquatic animal populations in check, which helps prevent too many of one species from upsetting the balance of their ecosystems.

They're pretty shy around people and usually try to stay away unless they feel threatened. Minnesota has rules about catching and handling snapping turtles to ensure their numbers stay healthy, showing the effort to balance human activities and preserve nature in Minnesota's diverse environments.

But it was enormous and terrifying!
