Maybe less talked about is the amount of accountability and dedication required to look after them in the long run. It is not true that humans are the only species whose "love language" is spending quality time together.
These animals love your company, as it can be essential to their health as well as yours. Even in cases where a pet is well-cared for overall, failing to meet their emotional needs can result in a variety of behavioral problems.
To put it simply, having a pet means you should be ready to be responsible for it, as that is the proper thing to do. Some animal varieties can become aggressive when housed in subpar conditions, and in extreme cases, they could even endanger the safety of those nearby.
Likewise, your pet runs the danger of experiencing health issues that could necessitate veterinarian care if you are unaware of or unable to fulfill the routine responsibilities of a caring pet owner. The entitled parent in today's story couldn't cater to the cat they adopted and wanted the OP to reimburse them for the cash they spent on the cat.

I have been racking my brains, even asked cat behaviorist friend and my own therapist as to possible reasons or causes for the ED's sudden personality change. He was super enthusiastic about the cat, only wanting to buy the most expensive and extra cat litter box and 5 tier cat tree with all the add ons. Because his cat deserves the best. They were even looking to install cat shelves and runs all over the house.
The poor cat only wanted affection
Some people shouldn't have pets
She probably doesn't know that
