It's astonishing how a straightforward social media message or image can elicit an emotional response. A mouthwatering image of a milkshake might make your mouth water and your stomach grumble, while a horrifying picture of an injury might make you wince in discomfort.

But the traditional cringe stuff is a completely different area of the internet that tends to make viewers uncomfortable. We do have empathy for the characters in cringe comedy, which is why we react to it so intensely.

We understand how terrible the folks we're watching must be feeling since we can relate to their experiences or because we've previously gone through essentially the same circumstance. But we also experience their anguish as we watch the sufferer, not with joy.

There is no schadenfreude in this situation; instead, there is secondhand humiliation and laughter brought on by discomfort and perhaps the scenario's relatability. Although cringe pictures can be uncomfortable, seeing them can make you remember that things could always be worse.
