The abandoned street dogs and cats of the tiny village of Pirogovo, located in the southern part of Ukraine's capital Kiev, have been very fortunate. The reason for their fortune is the animal shelter that was built on the former city dump on a hill near the village.

The lifesaving animal shelter was built all the way back in 1960. Around these parts, the shelter is mostly known as "knacker's yard" or just "booth".

Currently, the shelter is being run by the SOS animals society of Kiev. Everyone is thankful for this amazing animal shelter which is taking care of over 2000 stray dogs but also other abandoned animals.

"Support the movement for the prevention of cruelty to animals" is written on the gate along with the word "Asylum" on the right
