Allergies can strike at any time during a person's lifetime. Your immune system is a constantly changing organ that constantly retrains itself, so it's not always clear why some people develop allergies later in life when they didn't have them previously.

For the OP of today's story, she had cat allergies. Cat dander, saliva, or urine are among the specific cat products to which people with cat allergies respond.

Allergens are the compounds that set off these reactions. A cat allergy can result in symptoms ranging from minor respiratory issues to a syndrome that poses a life-threatening risk.
