With well over 200 unique breeds of cats throughout the entire world, the possibilities of what kind of cat will enter your heart and home are seemingly endless. Even how they end up in your life is ripe with potential from stumbling on a stray, rescuing from a shelter, and in other cases even buying a cat. That last concept peaked our curiosity because with so many beautiful cats in the world we found ourselves wondering what it costs to purchase an exotic cat. Just like with the various dog breeds in the world, some breeds of cats are coveted far above others and come with mighty price tags. Yet even with that assumption in mind, we found ourselves totally blown away by just how expensive a fancy cat can end up costing an enthusiastic buyer. There is also a smorgasbord of dogs that are highly expensive and sought after.

As crazy as these price tags may seem there is no denying the cats are exquisite just to look at. You may find yourselves wondering how far into your pockets you'd be willing to dig for one of the world's most exotic and expensive cats...

1. Himalayan cat

No, that's not a Persian cat, it's a Himalayan! With soft and fluffy fur characterized by the creamy coloring of a light body and darker freatures (like the tail, face, paws, and ears,) and vibrant blue eyes, the Himalayan cat is one many would love to embrace into their homes. They are gentle, sweet cats with a friendly yet obedient and easy to train demeanor. Dating back to original breeding in the 1950's in the United States, today Himalayans will cost you anywhere from $500 to $1,300 for a kitten!

2. Ashera

Considered the most exotic domestic cat in the entire world, the Ashera was deliberately bred by combining a domestic house cat and an Asian leopard cat! The original breeders insist the cat is hypoallergenic but it remains a debate to this day. This elegant and exquisitely designed cat will cost you an absolute fortune in the range of $22,000 to $100,000. You likely won't find one at your local humane society with a price tag like that!

3. Egyptian Mau

The Egyptian Mau has been around for 3,000 years and very little has changed about its beautiful looks. Their coats and skin are both spotted and their eyes are mesmerizing. If you wanted to bring one of these ancient, majestic cats into your home it will cost you between $500 and $1,500!

4. Peterbald

The Russian answer to the Sphynx cat, the Peterbald was deliberately bred in the mid 1990's in Russia. This cat's appearance is quite distinct with their elongated heads atop long, slim bodies, and large ears. Similar to the Sphynx we are more familiar with, their bald appearance doesn't prevent them from a soft, fuzzy coat you can feel. These social, sweet, and intelligent cats will cost you anywhere from $400 to $1,200!

5. Bengal cat

One of the most well known exotic cats is surely the Bengal Cat. Deliberately bred into existence by crossing an Asian Leopard cat with a domestic house cat, the Bengal is an impressive cat to say the least. They are well known for their enormous size and intelligence as well as being known to enjoy swimming and climbing. We may not be able to have leopards in our home but a Bengal cat is surely the next best thing... assuming you have between $1,000 and $4,000 to drop on one.

6. Norwegian Forest cat

The mighty Viking cat dates back a couple thousand years and today is still well known for their impressive size and coats. They're purr-fect for you if you live somewhere with frosty, harsh winters and they're phenomenal hunters but they come with a hefty price tag between $600 and $3,000.

7. Maine Coon

Famously known for being one of the largest domesticated cat breeds, the Main Coon can weigh as much as 33lbs! A mature adult can be as long as 4 feet, if you can believe it! Of course their enormous size comes with an enormous personality, full of gentle affection, eager to play, and eager to offer you loving companionship. Main Coons cost between $600 and $1,500.

8. Khao Manee

9. American Curl

The American curl kitten is so large it can hardly be told apart from the full-grown counterparts! The breed originates from California in the 1980's and on their tenth day of life their signature ears begin to turn back... similar to adorable little horns. Their ears are the significant feature that makes them the envy of thousands of people worldwide but if you want one in your home it will cost you! Between $1,000 and $3,000 to be precise.

A newcomer in the grand scheme of things, the Elf Cat has only been around since 2006. A very friendly and extremely intelligent cat, their mischief and curiosity have found their ways into the hearts of anyone willing to cough up $2,000.

11. Toyger

With a beautiful coat pattern that looks just like a tiger's, it's not too hard to imagine where they came up with the name! We may not be able to buy tigers but for somewhere between $500 and $3,000 we can purchase a Toyger cat and honor tigers in the wild in doing so.

The distinct feature of hanging ears notorious to the Scottish Fold is a result of a genetic mutation but none the less has made them a particularly sought after breed of cat. Playful and intelligent, this kitty is also known for it's enjoyment and ability to stand on its hind legs to better observe the things they are interested in. To purchase a Scottish Fold kitten you would want to prepare to spend as little as $200... or as much as $1,500!

14. Chausie

One of the world's rarest cat breeds, the Chausie was created when a domestic cat and a jungle cat were cross bred. The Chausie is so sociable that it is known to struggle to tolerate and cope with loneliness. But fret not, they are happy to enjoy the company of all from humans to other cats and even dogs! But it will surely cost you! As a rare cat breed and a beautiful one at that, the Chausie will cost between $8,000 and $10,000.

The Caracal moved categories not too long ago. Once a "wild predator," today the Caracal is considered an exclusive and expensive pet. But coughing up the $7,000 to $10,000 to own one of your own can help preserve the species on this Earth.

The origin of this beautiful cat is fascinating indeed! In the 1970's the Safari was created when cross breeding a domestic cat with a South American wild Geoffroy's cat.
