"I feel that my husband is being unreasonable"

Normally, people would extend a hearty congratulations to anyone whose child turned one. It is a significant milestone that should be celebrated for both you and the kid.
Cakes designed just for your baby to enjoy on their first birthday are known as smash cakes. It is common knowledge that a year-old child lacks basic life skills, such as table etiquette.
Because of this, they will probably use their fingers to eat the cake or even "smash" their face into it when you place it in front of them. In order to share the occasion on social media, the parents, caretakers, or photographers will photograph it when it happens.
In addition to being cute and humorous, smash cakes are the ideal way to cap off a first birthday. This is what the OP had in mind for her daughter's first birthday.
OP's husband will be out of town during their daughter's birthday. Her husband's family is planning to come to see them when he returns to have a birthday party for their daughter.
OP had plans to see her family while her MIL was visiting, but she wasn't okay with that arrangement. OP's husband has now told her that he doesn't want her to celebrate their daughter's first birthday.
This means that she couldn't get their daughter a cake or cupcake. His reason was that he now wanted to see her eat the cake or cupcake for the first time, and the OP was dumbfounded.

Reddit/throwra262860The OP later added an edit saying:
I am aware that my daughter does not know her actual birthday, but I was always planning to have a cake/cupcake with my daughter on her birthday regardless of my husband’s travel plans. I did want to mark the occasion and do something special, just a cupcake at least.
He was fine with this until my mil told me to tell him about my new plan to see my family. Having a cupcake means a lot to me and I have told him that. His trip is work related and can not be changed.

Reddit/throwra262860The OP can reveal what she knows
Reddit/throwra262860Some Redditors say that the OP should make sure she does the cake thing before her husband leaves, but only if the three of them are the ones present. In this way, the parents are present as their child eats their first cake or cupcake.
The OP can point out that her mother won't be present either if he objects to that and tries to insist on MIL being there. Establishing limits for both she and her spouse's parents is beneficial to a fulfilling partnership.
