Friends, is it offensive to name your pet 'Yankee'? This was the question that was bugging one pet owner so much that he turned to Reddit for help.
OP has an American Akita dog and he named him Yankee. He thought the name was hilarious and his dog didn't seem offended by it.
An unexpected person didn't share the sentiments of OP about the acceptability of his dog's name. OP's sister and her boyfriend went for a visit from the US.
His sister has been away from the UK for the past two years and this was the first time her boyfriend will be meeting their whole family, including OP's pets. He was not pleasantly surprised when he learned that OP named one of his dogs Yankee.
After they left, OP's sister called him in the middle of dinner. She asked OP if he could consider renaming his dog Yankee.
He thought she was kidding but she assured him that it was a serious request. Apparently, her boyfriend found the name Yankee offensive against Americans.
OP told his sister to leave his dog alone and to tell her boyfriend to grow up. The next day, the visiting couple showed up at OP's home unannounced to 'educate' him on why his dog's name was so offensive.
He said that Yankee is basically a slur against Americans
u/throwawaydogname0He compared it to naming a dog the n-word
u/throwawaydogname0OP said you really can't equate Yankee with the n-word
u/throwawaydogname0OP replied that he will not be renaming his dog because it would require a good amount of retraining and it could affect his safety as a personal guard dog
u/throwawaydogname0Just to be sure he was on the clear, OP messaged his American friends and they pretty much agreed that his dog's name wasn't offensive
u/throwawaydogname0OP doesn't owe his sister's boyfriend any apologies and he is planning to mess with him further
u/throwawaydogname0Given that OP's sister is a magnet for questionable people, it's not surprising she found the one American who found the term Yankee offensive
TaliesinWI, throwawaydogname0OP replied to this comment and we found out he wasn't even the worst boyfriend his sister ever had
[deleted]Out of this pool of men, this new guy is considered an upgrade
throwawaydogname0The sister's boyfriend should start a letter-writing campaign to express his dismay over the name of these companies
Careless-Image-885It's not really a contest of which word is more offensive if you can't even say the other word
ShmooperdoodleOP should share this anecdote with his sister's boyfriend, it won't probably change his mind but OP can watch him turn red
NesssMonster, throwawaydogname0OP, we need a confirmation on these assumptions
__hiphopanonymousOh wow, he really sounds like a stand-up guy. OP's sister is a lucky woman.
throwawaydogname0Please tell us that he met your cat named Cracker
TheExaltedNoob, throwawaydogname0He was more offended by a dog named Yankee than a cat named Cracker. Interesting.
TheExaltedNoob,throwawaydogname0OP generously provided us a list of the creative names he has given his pets all over the years
throwawaydogname0You would think OP committed a hate crime with the boyfriend's overreaction
Advanced-Extent-420OP loves his dad and his dad jokes so there we go
throwawaydogname0Did he give an actual reason why Yankee was such an offensive term for him?
Melodramatic_RavenThe sister's boyfriend is making a mountain out of a molehill. Based on the reaction from OP's post, he hasn't offended anyone by naming his dog Yankee except for his sister's thick-skinned boyfriend.
The only thing OP needs to apologize for is not sharing photos of Yankee and his wonderful cat, Cracker. We have a feeling this isn't the last ridiculous story OP will be sharing about his sister's Yankee boyfriend.
