Small-Town Woman Mocks Daughter-In-Law On Facebook For Locking Doors During Her Visit Without Knowing Her Traumatic History With Home Invasion
People find it so surprising when the person they've been poking and prodding with jokes suddenly bites back. They take offense to the person taking their "jokes" seriously when it was never funny.

A Reddit OP became the butt of her in-laws' jokes after she and her husband stayed with them one weekend. OP's in-laws live in an artsy small town where everyone knows each other.
They are the type of people who don't see the value of locking doors. Neighbors drop by unannounced just to say hi — it's that kind of town.
OP made the mistake of asking them if they brought the house keys before going to a restaurant. Her question was met with teasing laughter from her husband's relatives, who explained that they didn't need to lock their doors.
OP was uncomfortable but kept her thoughts to herself. She just moved her travel bag to her car before going to bed that night.
On the way back to their designated room, OP noticed that the doors were still unlocked. She asked if she should start locking up and was once again met with disbelief and laughter.
She locked the doors anyway for her own peace of mind. The following morning, her father-in-law was on his way out to get his newspaper.
He saw the front door was locked and asked OP if that was her doing. OP confirmed and was looked at like a crazy person.
The entire weekend, OP was mocked with pointed questions
They asked who hurt her, what happened in her childhood that made her so distrustful, and what she thought would happen if someone did break in, after all it's a small town, not a big city
OP and her husband left early after he got tired of telling his family to stop mocking OP
OP's MIL posted on Facebook and tagged her on it. She was basically saying how OP can't hack their small town lifestyle. OP was mocked in the comments section.
OP had enough and replied about the traumatic home invasion that happened to her best friend's dad when they were kids. OP's MIL deleted her post.
She then accused OP of going out of line. OP said she and her husband won't visit anymore which brought another slew of argument.
Shouldn't a host endeavor to make their guest comfortable during their stay? OP wasn't asking for some ridiculous privilege here.
Posting on Facebook for everyone to see that no one in your town locks their doors is... a choice
MIL hit two birds with one stone: she proved she's a terrible MIL and she's stupid enough to advertise how easy it is to burglarize their homes
OP spent a few days being mocked for something reasonable. Her need to have doors locked is also tied to a trauma which her in-laws would have known if they stopped mocking her for a few minutes.
The fact that MIL doubled down instead of apologizing to OP after that Facebook exchange says a lot about the kind of person she is
She was rightfully embarrassed for shaming her daughter-in-law for something so trivial as locking doors. What is this superiority of unlocked doors making you a better and more trusting person?
OP did the right thing by responding to her MIL's taunts. She would have been the butt of their jokes perpetually if she allowed them to get away with it.
