There is nothing more important in life than having a good relationship with your family. A single father shouted at his sister after she sed he was “creepy” for hugging his teen son, and now he’s asking Reddit if his response was suitable
Parenting approach and dynamics are a delicate subject. There's no universal approach to how people should raise their kids and keep a healthy and robust relationship. But a good relationship is something we all want. Every kid wants to be loved and cared about by their parents, and it's no different in dad-son relations.
Roland C. Warren, from the National Fatherhood Initiative, says that "too often, fathers think they're doing a better job in these areas than they are." Every parent wants what's best for their kid, and they apparently try hard, but is this the truth?
Roland starts with the idea of nurturing. "Nurturing means a lot of things. It certainly includes hugging and kissing our boys daily and telling them that we love them." He emphasized that "yes, even boys need hugs and kisses," an idea that infuriated the Reddit post's author's sister.
People pondered on the incident and shared their views:
Roland says that being affectionate isn't the only important thing. Nurturing also "includes taking care of their daily needs, like cooking for them, giving them baths, playing with them, reading to them, and helping their mothers."
Stereotypically, child nurturing is a practice most often associated with moms. But "despite the conventional wisdom that nurturing is primarily mom's territory, the root meaning of 'nurture' is 'to protect’—a role that most dads are comfortable with."
A father's love for his son shouldn't end with nurturing. One of the most important things is that a son's instinctive need to be affirmed by his dad. "Your affirmation prepares your son to enter the world with the confidence and' emotional armor' that he needs in order not just to survive, but to thrive," Roland explained.
Letting your son know how happy you are about him, not because of his achievements, but because of what kind of person he is, is extremely important. Your child should know that, even if the relationship gets strained from time to time, you will always be there for him. And that will not change, no matter what.
