Each year on August 26th, owners and fans of dogs honor them by celebrating their day - the International Dog Day. This holiday was established in 2004 by Colleen Paige.

Colleen is a Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Advocate. She chose preciously this day, August 26, for honoring all dog breeds, pure and mixed, and every dog on a planet because it has significant meaning to her.

On that date, her family adopted her dog named Sheltie when she was ten years old, and her love for dogs continued to grow. By honoring International Dog Day, Colleen wanted to point out all dogs, especially those in shelters, that are still searching for their forever home and waiting for their best mate to come.

There are many furry friends in shelters of all sizes and breeds, so everyone who feels love for dogs can find himself the best friend there. Since 2004, this holiday has encouraged and increased adoption and over one million dogs have been adopted in the United States.

But for owners who already share their home with a furry friend, this holiday has become a special day. They enjoy it together and do their best to make it unique, so their furry buddies know that day is especially for them.
