From domestic cats to lions and tigers, cats are susceptible to a volatile oil present in the catnip plant's stems and leaves. The plant is popular in herb gardens and grows widely as a weed.
It is considered to be nonaddictive and completely harmless to cats. Catnip sensitivity is inherited; approximately 70% to 80% of cats will display this behavior in the presence of the plant.
Furthermore, kittens are not affected by catnip until they are about six months old and have reached sexual maturity. Cats adore catnip and get euphoric from inhaling it.
They begin rolling, stroking, turning, or sleeping. After consuming catnip, some cats may become hyperactive or aggressive.
This reaction lasts around 10 minutes, following which the cat becomes immune to the effects of catnip for about 30 minutes.
