One of the cutest things a cat does is when it sits like a loaf of bread. For those who don't know what it is called (or if you call it something different), "loafing" occurs when a cat sits with all its limbs tucked underneath its body. Which is adorable, obviously.
It's no secret that cats do some weird things and some of these oddities have yet to be explained by human science. Plus, we all know cats like to be a little unpredictable. But, unlike some of the other strange behaviours that cats exhibit, science actually has an explanation for this one.
According to Mikel Delgado, a cat researcher at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, cats who sit in such a position are relaxed and are not preparing to run away or defend themselves.
This is why they tend to do it in comfortable locations, such as on a bed or chair. They're happy, content and feel safe in their environment.
It may also help them preserve heat. Just like people, cats know they have to tuck their toes in to keep warm!
However, cats also tend to sit on their paws when they're in pain. So it's a good idea to check on their feet just to make sure they're okay!
