BookTok is a popular subgenre on TikTok. Creators specializing in this community use their platform to review the books they have read and recommend what to put on their followers' reading lists.

Unfortunately, as with any popular community, BookTok is also controversial. Others have accused the creators of hyping up books that didn't deserve praise (see: Collin Hoover books) while disparaging books they deem "too complicated."

Some bibliophiles look down on the BookTok community while some appreciate it for "reviving" people's love for reading. The current drama is about a popular creator who allegedly scammed indie authors out of their hard-earned money.

In exchange, she promised to review their books on her massive platform to boost sales. She didn't deliver any of the promises she made.

It was clear in some of her reviews that she did not read the books she was paid to review. In some cases, she didn't post any video at all despite accepting payment from authors.

She has since deleted her BookTok account and set her other TikTok account to private amidst the controversy. Since BookTok is plagued with controversy, where do we look for book recommendations?

12. Agustina Bazterrica depicts a dystopian society where a virus has contaminated all animal meat.

14. This is non-fiction and has been adapted into film.
