Regent Street in London, England is a famous area for tourists and locals to go shopping. It's home to stores such as Burberry, Coach, Lululemon, and other prestigious brands. People, especially tourists, love to go and window shop and all of the luxurious stores that are available.
On one occasion, hundreds of people got an interesting surprise when glancing into the storefront of Lush. Lush is a cruelty-free (meaning no animal testing) company specializing in cosmetics and bath and body products. They also prefer to use completely natural ingredients for their products, as you can see in the infographic below.
Animal testing is a legal requirement for cosmetic products in 80% of the world. It's a huge issue. The Humane Society of the United States, according to their website, estimates that "500,000 mice, guinea pigs, rats, and rabbits suffer and die in these tests every year throughout the world."
It's not ok, and people need to be aware of the testing that these animals endure. Testing that they endure includes skin sensitization/irritation/corrosion (exposing the skin to potential allergens), eye irritation and corrosion, acute oral toxicity and dermal (skin) toxicity, acute inhalation toxicity, chronic toxicity, carcinogenicity (finding out how much of a chemical will induce cancer), toxicokinetics, reproductive toxicity, and genotoxicity. These are produced that are unethical and cause these animals severe, unnecessary pain. To find out more, visit this link.
These adorable creatures have feelings and can feel pain just like humans, and they need to be treated humanely.
GiphyArtist Jacqueline Traide did a demonstration in the window display of the Lush store on Regent Street in 2012 when she was 24 years old.
In this demonstration, she wore a flesh-tone suit and was placed on an exam table in the storefront. A man who played a scientist performed mock procedures on her that would usually be performed on the animals that are subject to this cruel practice.
DailyMailThe performance ended with Jacqueline acting as if she had died, and then being placed in a trash bag and literally being placed on a pile of trash already sitting outside on the street. The whole thing was quite gruesome.
However, as you can see, it got attention from hundreds of people. Outside, Lush employees explained the demonstration to bystanders and got signatures for a petition trying to pass a law that would ban animal testing in the EU. At the time, it has been delayed for 20 years- too long.
LushThe whole thing was documented in a short video. It's a little too gruesome to show here, so you can watch at the link below.

YoutubeThe moral of the story is that animal testing is cruel, inhumane, and needs to stop. There is really no excuse- especially when science has advanced to the point it's at now. There are so many better alternative to it. Alttox.com, an organization dedicated to advocating for non-animal testing, has a list of proven effective methods of testing that don't involve cruelty to animals. Check it out here.
If you are interested in stopping animal testing, consider supportive organizations such as The Humane Society of the United States. They are both in the United Staes and International, and you can find them here. If you want to take it a step further, consider buying only cruelty-free hygiene and cosmetic producthttps://www.crueltyfreekitty.com/s. A great resource for this is Cruelty-Free Kitty.
