Uncle Played Favorites And Broke Into His Brother's House While They Were Away To Customize His Niece's Car As A "Surprise"
"We left it like barbie's car, but that's her style so we don't care"

Having siblings can come with its own set of ups and downs. Depending on the day, a sibling can be your best or worst friend, though usually, even on their worst days, they’ll still be there for you.
Conflict between siblings is inevitable when you have to share a space 24/7 for 18 or more years. Thankfully, as you both grow into adulthood and are able to move into your own space, the sibling relationship tends to mellow out.
And when your sibling has a kid of their own, you get to experience a whole new world of love for your new nibling. They’re basically the closest thing to having a kid of your own without actually having a kid of your own.
This works out excellent for those of us who don’t want to be parents but still enjoy unleashing our inner child or just like being a loving influence for a child. Being the fun aunt or uncle lets you be your nibling’s first and best look at adulthood.
All that to say, when Redditor AITA_nlsinn9928 shared his story to r/AITA (Am I The A-hole), he definitely had the “Fun Uncle” vibe down. He turned to the popular community to detail how a surprise for his niece turned his relationship with his older brother sour and to see if he was really an a-hole for customizing his 16-year-old niece’s car that was gifted to her by her grandfather (OP and his brother’s father).
Keep scrolling to get the full story and see how Reddit decided to judge him.
OP starts off by explaining that he and his 3 siblings grew up watching their "huge car dork" dad work on many cars over the years
AITA_nlsinn9928While initially it was for OP's mom, his parents ended up gifting their Volkswagon Beetle to his eldest brother's 16-year-old daughter
giphyBut to OP's annoyance, his brother has imposed rules on the car, specifically that it must be shared with her stepbrother
tenorOP continues to explain that originally, the car was baby blue, but noted his niece is a "pink gal"
AITA_nlsinn9928So naturally, he and his other brother decided they needed to "surprise" their niece for her birthday
giphyWhile his eldest brother and his family were out, they used a spare key to get into his home and took the car out for a makeover
AITA_nlsinn9928Basically, they turned it into Barbie's Dream VW Beetle
tenorThe surprise was quickly discovered when the family returned home, much to the 16-year-olds delight, but her dad was less than pleased
AITA_nlsinn9928OP's brother feels that they should have taken the stepbrother into consideration, but the brothers argued the car was intentionally gifted to their niece, and no one else
tenorHe went on to accuse them of trying to embarrass the step-son and made it so he has to buy him his own car
AITA_nlsinn9928OP felt pretty secure that they weren't in the wrong, but started to feel conflicted when their Mom weighed in
tenorOP really stirred up controversy with his post, drawing in a lot conflicting opinions
giphyMaking OP's 16-year-old niece share a gift is definitely an a-hole move on his brother's part
tosser9212Since OP's dad legally owns the car and has no issues with the changes, then OP did no wrong
No_Yogurtcloset_1020This is definitely a gift that OP's niece will treasure for a long time
ContentedRecluseReversing the logic in these situations never works
Pickled-soupAnd there's nothing that is keeping her stepbrother from still using it
RainahRedditNothing, except for the toxic masculinity, maybe
giphyThe owner consented to the customization, sooo
TheRestForTheWickedThe gift was intended for OP's niece, so she should be considered the owner
isolaloressaOP's brother should have bought his stepson a car in the first place, not use his daughter's gift from her grandparents
KettlewiseSo long as the title of the car is not in OP's brother's name, he has no say about what happens with the car
MotherBikeThe fact that Homer Simpson drives a pink car is a great point, too
giphyIf the story was told from the stepbrother's POV, would people feel differently?
telmquistOP deliberately started a conflict where there was none
Last-Neighborhood-71I feel like this is the best take - everyone acted like a jerk in different ways
sheramom4But folks still think the intent behind the gift is a critical part of the judgment
Happyfun0160It was gifted to the niece✅, she loves pink✅, she loved the car✅
Signal_Historian_456On paper, it sounds like everything is fine
tenorIt does seem like OP came up with this to keep the stepson from using it
OkCantaloupe6112Okay, but how did everyone else skip over the break-in and grand theft
giphyI totally get where OP was coming from with wanting to do something special for his niece. However, it does feel like they intentionally leaned hard into the Barbie Dream Car theme to keep her step-brother from using it, and we’ve gotten a glimpse of the fallout from that.
Do you think OP was out of line, or was he justified in pinkifying the shared vehicle? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below!
