Person Gave Their Dog A Human Name And Accidentally Started Massive Family Drama

Human names for pets are incredibly funny and anyone who thinks otherwise is probably a bad person.

Person Gave Their Dog A Human Name And Accidentally Started Massive Family Drama

When you are meeting your family's significant others for the first time, it is a nerve-wracking experience for all involved. There is a lot of pressure on the family to be cool, kind, accepting, whilst also trying to get to know the person without interrogating them, and there is also a lot of pressure on the new partner to come across with good intentions, and as a good person.

It's hard to do all of these things without creating an awkward environment. This is particularly true for the family who is probably trying to guess how everyone else feels about the new partner without making it obvious or rude.

Sometimes though the family notices huge red flags in the partner, and this is especially true when it is over something small or irrational. That is what happens in this story when OP’s sister's new boyfriend has a real issue with the name of her dog.

In order to make sure that they weren't overreacting OP went on over to the “Am I the Asshole?” Thread on Reddit to tell the hilarious tale (or hilarious TAIL, if you will). Read the whole story below and see some of the best judgments, about this dog name dilemma.

The post begins with a simple question: AITA for naming my dog Brad?

Posted by u/PapaJonCenaSpriteMix:

So I've always thought it's funny when dogs have human names. Much more amusing to me than giving them obvious dog names like Spike or Jellybean or whatever. Never had an issue with Brad's name being what it is until recently.

"My sister got a new boyfriend, and I'm sure you can see where this is going. I don't think I even have to say his name. Well, my sister came over the other day with him and we met for the first time. Everything was all fine and good until he asked what my dog's name was. I laughed a little and said that his name was also Brad."

Human Brad is not happy about it!

"He looked at me for a second and asked if I was joking or not, and I told him no, his name is actually Brad. After that his whole mood flipped and the remainder of the visit just had an uncomfortable vibe. A while after they left my sister called me and started berating me for "disrespecting her boyfriend"."

So what do we think folks?

"Honestly, this seems like such a Brad thing for him to do and I don't think I did anything wrong here, but maybe I'm wrong? Should I have lied about Brad's name so I didn't risk hurting his feelings?"

The judgements began to roll in...

blinkingsandbeepings

"I died at "such a Brad thing for him to do" not gonna lie.

Honestly I have an extremely common human name and have never met a pet that had the same name, but if I did I would be so tickled. What a weird thing to get offended over. NTA."

It is a weird thing to be offended by

PmMeLowCarbRecipes

I have a not very common person name but a very common dog name. Sometimes it’s a bit awkward, about the same level as having people sing happy birthday to you, but it’s such a weird thing to be offended by.

Seeing a dog called Brad would be so funny to me though.

On Reddit, people seemed pretty thrilled at the prospect of sharing a name with a pet

The-Moocat:

I have a less common human name but actually met a cat that shared my first name once and I was THRILLED. I definitely took a picture with said cat.

After all, it is a pre-existing pet!

dmhatery:

NTA. Pre-existing. It is unreasonable to expect that when you named your dog, you were able to anticipate your sister’s boyfriend’s name.

It’s not like your sister is working her way through a list, and you knew in advance Brad would be up to bat in September of 2021, and that he would be offended.

When he meets other people named Brad who are rude/gross/criminal, is he offended those people share his name?

How does Brad Pitt feel about all of this?

"sister called me and started berating me for "disrespecting her boyfriend".

Both myself and my my dog, George, think that Brad is disrespecting your dog. NTA. They seem a bit weird over it as well. Does he have a problem that Brad Pitt also has his name?"

The "Human Nigel" story is a classic

HavePlushieWillTalk

I was reading a post about how someone feels the same as you about names, and so called their cat Nigel. Then got a boyfriend... Named Nigel. Human Nigel apparently dislikes that the girlfriend's family calls him Human Nigel.

NTA. Human Brad can get over it. Human Brad is a bit frightening, honestly, nobody should react that way to an animal having their name. I have a parrot with a human name, I didn't do that to offend anyone with the name; he came with it.

C'mon Brad

DrBitchcraftMD:

Brad needs to grow up and be a good boy like Brad.

If Brad #1 had the ability to write signs this would be it!

Okay, so the facts are, it was a pre-existing pet, and human Brad seems irrationally angry over it. Are you not supposed to give your pets a name without assessing the possibility of eventually knowing someone with that name, because that seems like a nearly impossible task?

What is more, Brad is an objectively hilarious name for a dog, especially one that looks the same as this one does: which is a cute little dude with attitude. The people in the comments on the thread were pretty much in agreement that Human-Brad was the one in the wrong here, and many of them seem pleased with the idea of sharing a name with a pet.

But what do you think: red flag or right to be upset? Sound off in the comments below!
