With the multitude of streaming platforms, we’re introduced to new shows and movies all the freaking time. With that of course comes new actors that we can be infatuated with and obsess over every week.
Then, over time that actor just becomes synonymous with the character we know and love, and sometimes we kind of forget that they’re a whole different person outside the 50 minutes we see each week. So much so that while most of the media we consume in the U.S is geared and set WITHIN the U.S, we just assume the actors are also American.
That can lead to quite a surprise when we see them in interviews or other roles where they use their real-life accent that is VERY different from their characters. And really, it’s really telling about their talent as an actor, to be able to literally take on a whole new persona, accent included.
Take Riverdale, for example, KJ Apa, the actor who plays Archie is from New Zealand and has that very obvious Kiwi accent when offset. Or Yvonne Strahovski, who plays Serena Joy in The Handmaid’s Tale, turns out she’s Australian!
Everyone has that one celebrity that they were shocked to find out they weren’t actually American. And we made a list of over 40 actors who have the most convincing American accents that you may not have realized they weren’t.
Keep scrolling to see which of your favorite actors have tricked you into believing they were from the U.S.

giphyThere is a surprising amount of Kiwis on this list. I wonder what it is about New Zealanders getting to play Americans?
Did anyone on the list surprise you? Did we miss a chance to mention another notable actor that would surprise folks to learn they weren’t American?
