Sometimes, offering a helping hand to someone in need doesn't pay off. A Reddit user recently shared a story in the AITA (Am I The A**hole?) subreddit about how she helped out some family friends, and it didn't end well.

Reddit user u/MidwestPrincess09 explained that she had allowed some of her daughter's cousins to stay at her house until their mother found a new home. One of the older children and his girlfriend stayed with the OP for a month and brought their young cat with them.

For over a year after everyone had moved out, the Redditor said she had continuously asked the young couple to come and collect their things, and the cat that they left behind.

But the matter dragged on and on, so the OP decided she'd had enough. She notified them that she was putting all of their belongings outside for them to collect, and she found a new home for their cat.

Four years have now passed, and the Redditor is receiving threats and abuse. The male involved even turned up at the OP's house with three of his friends, banging on her windows and screaming at her to give the cat back.

He has also been leaving threatening voice messages on OP's phone, saying he will shoot her. However, the Reddit user says the police will not intervene.

So, as a last resort, the woman turned to the Reddit community for advice. Keep scrolling to see what they had to say.

What's your take on this situation? Do you think the OP brought this on herself or is she well within her rights to be upset?

Regardless of whether she should have rehomed the cat or not, there's no denying that the owner has no right to threaten her and her family with violence. Sadly, sometimes helping someone out can end badly for all parties involved.
