It centered around Nancy Sauer, a wealthy woman who passed away at the age of 84, leaving behind not just a sizable estate, but also a specific provision in her will dedicated to the welfare of her seven cherished Persian cats.

Following the demise of her son and husband, Mrs. Sauer meticulously crafted her will to ensure her feline companions would continue to reside in her $2.5 million home until the very last whisker ceased to twitch. Despite efforts to honor her desire for the cats to remain in their familiar surroundings, they were relocated to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay for adoption.

This decision sparked widespread debate and disappointment, with many questioning why a live-in guardian couldn’t have been appointed to uphold Mrs. Sauer's wishes.

Although Sauer's obituary barely hinted at her deep affection for her feline companions, those close to her remembered her as a passionate advocate for animal welfare. Her birthday celebrations, shared with her cats Cleopatra, Goldfinger, Leo, Midnight, Napoleon, Snowball, and Squeaky, were a testament to the bond she shared with her furry family.
