Getting married can be the ultimate sign of love, devotion and commitment of a relationship to a lot of people. The majority of those who do decide to make that legal and/or religious plunge to love the same person for (ideally) the rest of their lives make a big to-do of getting married, with beautiful weddings planned down to each minute detail.
And why not? Weddings can be such a joyful event to share with your loved ones.
Whether that's a small intimate ceremony with a select few, or a giant lavish party with all your friends and family, and maybe even that one kid from middle school who made fun of you, but LOOK AT ME NOW, CLARENCE, I'm THRIVING and MARRIED and I'm HAVING A GIANT PARTY JUST FOR ME.
Ahem... back to my point, marriage is a giant milestone in adulthood. We lose a lot of the fun and celebrations we once had as children, and this can be one of those times to really go all out.
Unless you don't, which some people chose not to. A small courthouse ceremony, with just your partner and witnesses, is exactly what a smaller portion of couples that decide to get married do.
It's infinitely cheaper and less of a headache to plan everything. In a similar vein, a backyard wedding: simplicity can be exquisite and perfect for those who desire it.
But getting married on accident... in a UPS store? Much more unlikely.
Except that's exactly what happened for Reddit user Dirty_Toothbrushes and his fiancée. Trying to get all their ducks in a row before their court house ceremony, they printed out some forms from their county website, and brought it to their local UPS store to get notarized.
When his fiancée called the courthouse sometime afterwards, she was informed by the clerk that the paperwork they had notarized was actually their marriage license! The clerk further went on to explain that the state didn't require a ceremony with a judge at the courthouse since their license was already notarized.
They shared their unique story on Reddit's TIFU (Today I Fucked Up) community, a place where people share all sorts of stories ranging from hilarious to terrible, bizarre to heartwarming. Check out their story and the communities reaction below.
