In the 14th century, the belief came about that people with supernatural powers exist and that they are out to punish and hurt people. Now, we don't really know or will ever know if these claims were real and if there are people with supernatural powers.

Who knows maybe your colleague is a werewolf in hiding! Anyway, so the people then went into mass hysteria and panic and they decided to hunt down these "witches" and execute them. They did this through burning them at the stake and hanging. 

This lasted all throughout the 18th century and they ended up killing thousands of people. The stories of witches still haunt and scare a lot of people to this day, but luckily now we have such advanced technology and science that they have determined that most of the people that were killed back then were in fact innocent.
