If you're a cat lover then a cat café might sound exactly like something you'd like to be a part of.
If you're a cat lover then you might know what a cat cafe is and if you don't then you definitely need to. Cat cafes are quite popular in China and are seldom in the states, but they're slowly starting to make an appearance.
The very first cat cafe was opened in Taiwan in 1998 and that has started a huge chain of them in China. People love them because they get to hang out with cats and have some stress relief away from their busy day.
Cat cafes provide the ultimate experience by allowing people to come in and play with, pet, groom, and feed cats. Hao Ju and Joey Fu are familiar with cat cafes which is why they felt they could create one in America.
They opened up their own cat cafe in College Station, Texas called H&J's Teah House and they have 19 cats there. Their mission is to make cat cafes widely available and common while also providing possible foster care in the meantime.
Cat cafes can be the perfect place to go to have some stress relief or relaxing moments to recharge you. Playing with cats is super fun and petting them or nurturing them can be calming so let's dive in and see what's happening with this cat cafe.
Hao and Joey visited a cat cafe in San Antonio, Texas but it wasn't anything like the ones in Asia. They decided that they were able to build their own cat cafe in hopes of bringing the classic cat cafe vibe to this side of the world.
As Hao explained to KBTX, “We thought ‘we are from Asia, where cat cafes come from, we can definitely do a better one.’” They did exactly what they said and created H&J's Tea House in 2021.
18 cats will stay in the cat cafe permanently while one is available for adoption. They had a little bit to say about the adoptable cat process as well and the idea behind that.
“Back in Asia, all of the cats in the cafes are permanent residents. They don’t really offer adoptable cats, but that has proved to be pretty popular here, and people keep asking if our cats are adoptable or not.”
“We are looking to partner with some animal shelters in Houston or Bryan to see if they would like to let us have some of their cats, but let them do all the paperwork and stuff,” Hao told The Battalion.
“We’re basically going to be a foster home.”
“They can expect a full cat experience,” said Hao. “The customers get in, they play with the cats, they feed the cats, and they can groom the cats.”
Twice a month H&J's Teahouse donates 25% of its proceeds to Aggieland Humane Society.
If you're ever in the College Station, Texas area then be sure to pay a visit to H&J's Teahouse to get some cuddle time with the cats, possibly find one to adopt, and help out an amazing cause. We should expect to see more cat cafes pop up and be popular in other areas than Asia.
