Parenting is a wild ride, no matter how you look at it. Sure, there is a lot of positivity involved in raising tiny humans but each journey is also equipped with plenty of obstacles and hardship. Each unique family has their own struggles and uprisings but some stories are more complex than others.
For part-time nurse and full-time mommy, Jessica, her family's dynamic included unusual obstacles often misunderstood by outsiders. So it was normal for her to feel flustered and worried about her children, especially her special needs son. So when an act of sincerity and love came from a very unexpected place, Jessica was compelled to share and rise up the man who went above and beyond when he certainly didn't have to and where most certainly would not.
Jessica and her husband Drew spent a great deal of time trying to kick start their family and naturally conceive children but after so many years of trying their doctor informed them their only chance at parenthood was going to be adoption. Thankfully, an opportunity came to them and they are now the proud parents of three-year-old Sailor and two-year-old Sunny! But Sailor is not like most children, and it did not take long for Jessica and Drew to notice that he had some serious health issues. In an interview with Bored Panda, Jessica said:
My son was born with two rare, unrelated brain defects: Optic Nerve Hypoplasia, or ONH, which means his optic nerves didn’t fully form in utero and he is blind as a result. The other is a Chiari Malformation. Sailor also has a seizure disorder. We have a team of pediatricians, neurologists, endocrinologist, ophthalmologist, and gastroenterologist who help follow his health closely.
Jessica Nash DonnahooDescribing Sailor, Jessica said, "Sailor has several developmental delays and is unable to communicate his needs, such as hunger, pain, etc. I try to meet all of his needs but, like any toddler, he is just sometimes unhappy."
As expected with toddlers, one morning in particular was proving to be especially rough for Sailor. Jessica found herself overwhelmed with chores and caring for Sunny and to top it off, Sailor just couldn't stop crying and it was all colliding "perfectly," so to speak, with an appointment for an internet technician to come into their home to upgrade their internet service. In Jessica's own words, the unsuspecting dude just walked into a "mess."
Robert, however, was not phased and actually did something unexpected: the best he could to help.
Jessica Nash DonnahooUnderstandably amazed, Jessica documented the incident by taking a photo and posting to Facebook in an open letter to Spectrum Internet, because actions like Robert's are precisely the sort of good the world needs to see.
Jessica Nash Donnahoo“Dear Spectrum Internet,Today your technician Robert came to our home to upgrade our internet and help us start up TV streaming. He walked into a mess. My son, Sailor, is three years old. He was born with two rare brain defects and he is blind. He is unable to communicate his needs, and today has been rough for him. He has been crying all morning. I’ve been trying to soothe him while also meeting the needs of my two year old daughter, cleaning, washing dishes, and doing laundry while my husband works. It’s just been a tough day. When Robert walked in and started talking, Sailor ran to him and reached up. Robert didn’t seem bothered at all and, instead, held my son off and on for the whole 45 minutes he was in our home. He snuggled him close while I folded laundry. It was a huge relief to this tired momma. Robert could have walked in, rushed, and left but instead he saw a need greater than internet and met it. That’s beyond customer service- it’s humanity at its best. Robert deserves a raise… a promotion… something! He’s an asset to your company and I will never forget his kindness. Sincerely, Jessica”
Spectrum responded to Jessica:
Rob actually works for a subcontractor but the VP of Spectrum Enterprises called me directly to thank me for the post and to report that they’re proud of Rob’s choice to step in and help with my son! The VP also has a special needs child and was touched by Rob’s act of kindness.
Jessica Nash DonnahooFor her, Jessica said what most of us are thinking about how important it is to still see the good in the world. She said:
I think that we live in a world where we are so overwhelmed with news of politics, violence, and drugs. I think this resonated with so many people because we all need to have our faith in humanity restored at times. This post about one complete stranger doing something so kind for another is proof that there still good people out there!
Jessica Nash DonnahooIn an interview with Good Morning America, Rob recalled the day that ended up going viral:
I said, 'You want me to pick you up buddy?' while looking at her just to get a feel or not if it would be a problem. She seemed OK with it so I picked him up and held him while I was doing a few things inside. He was super comfortable with it to the point he started getting sleepy.
Holding Sailor and comforting Sailor didn't stop Rob from doing his job, either. He multi-tasked like a superhero!
Rob KinneyPeople on Facebook who saw the post began singing praises.
FacebookIn a response to the viral aspect of her story, Jessica told GMA:
think the reason that this act of kindness has resonated with so many people is that we can all relate — as parents, grandparents or just anyone who has been overwhelmed. In a world of mass shootings, political scandals, and drugs, we all need to be reassured that humanity and kindness still exist. Rob and my post did just that.
FacebookFor Kinney, he's not got an ego over any of this. In fact, he told GMA in a matter of fact way precisely where he believes the true credit goes:
For them to adopt him and take care of him on a daily basis is much more than what I did for a short period of time. God really has blessed that family and will continue to do so because of the kind and gentle spirit they have. They deserve more recognition than anyone.
FacebookEither way, Rob is clearly a good person.
FacebookWe're all reassured that there is still good in the world.
FacebookCompassion makes the world go around!
FacebookFor now, we just truly hope that Rob's genuine kindness and good heart inspires countless people globally to walk through life with empathy and compassion. It truly is the thing that can move mountains.
