Man Leaves His Front Door Open & Gets Chosen By A Stray Dog Who Invites Herself In

When it comes to getting a new pet, most people put a lot of thought into the process. Will you adopt? If so, from which shelter? And there is a lot of thought put into which furry friend is going to be the right fit for your family. Yes, bringing a new pet into the family is a lifelong commitment and is certainly not a decision that should be made lightly, or on a whim.

However, for some people, that decision-making process is a little more unique. Take, for example, Jack Jokinen from Fishtown, Philadelphia. The story of how Jack came to adopt his beautiful dog, Suzy is one of the most different - and heartwarming stories - that you will hear.

One Saturday morning, Jack was woken up by his wife saying there was a random dog in their house.

“When we found Suzy it was a combination of scared and confused. We had no idea how she got here and worried someone was in our house. She was scared and shaking from being wet and cold,” Jack said.

Where did the mystery pup come from? Jack decided to check the security cameras, and it became clear that the cute puppy hadn't just appeared out of nowhere.

The video showed that Jack had accidently left the front door open. Suzy, who was a malnourished and injured stray, saw the door open to a warm home on a cold night and let herself in.

Later on, a stranger walking by saw the open door and closed it, locking the dog inside.

Jack realized that Suzy needed urgent medical attention, so he took her to the vet to have her thoroughly checked over.

Suzy was severely malnourished and she had no microchip.

“Suzy has a heart murmur, hook worn, infected paws, pad damage and atrophy in one of the legs from it being so damaged. She needs a bunch of dental work but is very underweight so we need to get her weight up and have some tests to make sure she can be put under for procedures.”

Jack knew that the dog would need a lot of work and attention, but he couldn't bring himself to surrender her to a shelter.

“We decided to adopt her because she had no owner, and our first dog George has brought us so much joy, we could imagine just putting her in the system,” he said.

“She has been great with our family, including our baby. She is very sweet and just wants to be loved. Suzy is on the mend and getting better every day. Her body is filling out and she is on antibiotics to treat some of her problems. Shes got a long road ahead but is on the way,” Jack said.

Suzy's work is ongoing.

But she's getting better & better.

Suzy's story quickly went viral, however, Jack and his family have been left with a huge veterinary bill and have had to ask for donations.

“The twitter thread took a life of its own. I never expected it to turn into this but Suzy is now the internets dog. People have donated about $18k towards Suzy’s medical bills. We hope they arent that high and we can take the remaining funds to donate to a worthwhile cause,” Jack says.
