It can be hard to spot a social climber if you're not aware of the signs, but their intentions and motivations are usually pretty clear. They crave attention and status above all else and will often try to impress others with gifts, possessions, or even stories that may not even be true.
Additionally, they'll target people of influence to form connections and climb the proverbial ladder higher. One telltale sign is they may act differently around different groups of people; by that I mean they'll talk differently or change their interests or values depending on who they're talking to.
So if you ever feel like your friend's personality takes on a new hue when in the company of certain people, then chances are you may have a social climber as a friend! Would you keep them?
Well, that depends on how you feel. If this person is using people, then maybe it's time to let go.
In a recent post on the "Am I The A**hole?" (AITA) subreddit, a woman asked the community if there was something wrong with the thing she said about friends. The issue started when the original poster's (OP's) friend noticed that she's only been inviting rich people to the wine-tasting events she organizes.
Here are the words that hurt her friend:
of course some friendships have additional value. No one has ever claimed all relationships are created equal.
The OP talked about her conversation with a friend.
RedditShe only wants the rich kids to come to the wine tasting events.
RedditThe words that made her the a-hole.
RedditMost Redditors who responded to this thread agreed that the OP is a user.
RedditThe Redditors see no reason for the OP to befriend rich people other than to use them.
RedditEven if the OP defended herself, people still see her as a user.
RedditThese rich kids probably know her intentions already.
RedditFriendships with these people are more desirable, because she can use them.
RedditShe intentionally chooses these friends because she has a motive.
RedditTrue. Rich people are trained to sniff people who intend to use them.
RedditThis isn't called friendship.
RedditShe could've just said it's just for networking. Nothing's wrong with that.
RedditThe OP's parents don't have the expertise to label someone as narcissistic.
RedditThe OP hurt her friends with her words.
RedditLooks like it.
RedditThis person needs to understand the difference between making connections and friendships.
RedditBashing her circle of friends wasn't necessary.
RedditFor this Redditor, the OP is the a-hole for a different reason.
RedditThis person will eventually lose real friends if she continues to value friends based on how much money they have.
RedditIndeed she lost a friend. And she'll probably lose even more.
RedditShe didn't have to word it that way.
RedditThe OP may be denying that she's a user, but the way she acted toward her friend and the words she chose to utter says a lot about her real intentions.
She needs to change her mindset about friendships and stop saying things that will hurt the people close to her. She'll gradually lose her real friends otherwise.
