With the extreme popularity of TikTok and Instagram Reels, it's almost hard to imagine that Snapchat is still a social media force to be reckoned with. This is especially true if you consider some of the staggering statistics from the last year.

By the end of 2020, and being less than a decade old, Snapchat boasted 238 million active users with a staggering 3 billion snaps being sent every single day but as the end of 2021 approaches their statistics are indicating the platform is not haunted by it's competition. In fact, they've grown in users over the last year and are at 293 million active users.

Those numbers are impressive even if they pale in comparison to TikTok (whose developers say they have 1 billion active users daily and reported "nearly 700 million monthly active global users last summer." Still, close to 300 million active users is nothing to tsk-tsk at, and Snapchat has proven it's still a contender in the industry, with room for continued growth, and indicating it's not going anywhere any time soon.

Snapchat may not have as many active users as TikTok or have users creating nearly as many daily snaps as Instagram users are creating stories (around 500 million per day,) but Snapchat has been very savvy with how they are coming into the future, and if the facts don't convince you, perhaps the tremendously funny snaps we're cackling over today will.

In 2020, Snapchat did something really different by targeting the public interest in US politics. Snapchat established a dedicated channel for the 2020 Presidential debates, and both Trump and Biden's campaign teams set up accounts and engaged on the platform.

Bloomberg Media said that this move "the platform turned into a high-tech battleground between former US President Donald Trump and current president Joe Biden." Statistically speaking, most Snapchat users are voting age.

Not only that, but Snapchat helped 400,000 people mostly under the age of 24 register to vote in 2018 and their 2020 election coverage reeled in 30 million viewers alone. The future of US politics might have quite the relationship with Snapchat.

Snapchat was founded in 2011 by Stanford University students Evan Spiegel, Reggie Brown, and Bobby Murphy, but before Snapchat became what it is two of the students created a precursor app called Picaboo. In early interviews, the founders have said that they created the app because people don't want everything to be remembered.

Additionally, 95% of Snapchat users say the app makes them happy, and that report came back more than any other app included in the survey. Snapchat users also also report feeling "playful and silly while using it - likely because it's a place where you can be yourself, stay close with good friends, and share your day-to-day."

Another common complaint with Snapchat is that they don't consider it "user friendly," as in a user who is not familiar with the entire interface of the app may struggle to get the hang of it. Many of it's most active users have been using it for a long time as it's made changes on an annual basis to be what it is today.
