Lying is something that people don’t always understand why, how, or when it occurs. Lying, as a means of deceiving, serves a number of purposes, such as the desire to defend oneself or others, sometimes just to hurt other people, sometimes for pleasure, but most notably, people believe it encourages and develops creativity and imagination, particularly in children.
But sometimes these lies go a little too far, escalating to levels no one could have predicted. Perhaps they could have imagined it if they had previously been burned by the lie, potentially suffering the effects and then sharing them on social media.
People have lately been sharing the lies they actually started that were simple at first but spun out of control because somebody decided to take the bait and then make it even worse than they actually were. When someone asked on Reddit about the smallest lies people have told that have had the most serious consequences, many people shared interesting stories about telling small lies and suffering serious consequences afterward.
This particular post quickly became a viral thread with more than 10,600 upvotes and 6,700 responses, with the best responses making it into our well-curated list of the smallest lies with the biggest consequences. So scroll down and take a look.

These lies can actually conceal a minor situation. However, they eventually spiral into something larger, and we find ourselves caught in some unpleasant situations.
