Given the popularity of Marie Kondo's show and the increase in items being donated to the less fortunate; consider not giving them to the Salvation Army.

Charities are often poised as being selfless and doing great things for the disadvantaged people within a community. So, therefore, when you donate to charity, you feel as though you can safely assume that your donations are going to help people who need them. But that isn't always the case.

One woman took to Twitter to share her experience with the Salvation Army, and it was not a good experience. The thread outlined negligence, abuse and unfair treatment towards those staying in the shelters. People who stay in such shelters are often homeless, victims of violence, or suffering from mental illness. Those people need help: not more hardship.

You can read a Reddit thread here.

And a couple of articles here and here.

They all show that charities may not be as they seem.

Of course, not everyone has had a negative experience, and shelters across countries and cities are run differently. But that doesn't invalidate the struggles of these people. Nor does it excuse the fact that people go to shelters for help and often end up receiving anything but.

Be mindful of the charities you support.
