Passengers in the first-class section enjoy a range of special perks even before stepping onto the plane. To begin with, they are not required to wait in the typically long check-in line for economy class travelers.
They also receive the benefit of complimentary checked baggage and a smoother security screening process, often with access to a dedicated TSA line. Once onboard, first-class passengers have the privilege of being among the first to board the aircraft.
This gives them ample time to find space for their luggage and settle comfortably before the rest of the passengers board. Inside the cabin, they are treated to extra legroom, wider seats that recline further, cozy blankets and pillows, a luxurious amenity kit, and an enhanced beverage service, which may include alcoholic beverages.
Additionally, they enjoy a higher quality and often more abundant selection of food offerings. People who can afford it can truly indulge in a more comfortable and luxurious travel.
Normally, you wouldn't see a problem if anyone in your travel group decided to upgrade their seats. But in this story, which was shared by a big man on the "Am I The A**hole?" (AITA) subreddit, his mother-in-law found displeasure after he made the upgrade from business class to first class.
The original poster decided to upgrade his and his girlfriend's plane seats. This caused his mother-in-law to be upset.
RedditHe explains to the community that he's a large guy.
Given his ability to a
fford more comfortable seating options, he usually opts for economy comfort or business class when he flies.
RedditHe didn't let his girlfriend know at first. He surprised her when the flight staff called their cabin.
The OP's MIL was upset about it. She felt it was unfair that two parties are seated in different cabin classes.
RedditThe OP isn't the a-hole. The MIL is just jealous (and the real a-hole in this situation).
RedditPeople call the MIL "the jelly belly."
RedditThe MIL was being entitled here. Nothing's wrong with upgrading because it's more comfortable.
RedditShe should've just upgraded her seat if she's this jealous.
RedditSome Redditors believe that this mom is just bullying her daughter.
RedditFor this Redditor, the surprise should've been saved for a trip where it's just the two of them.
RedditThe mom should be happy for her daughter because her daughter got to experience something unique.
But she displayed entitled behavior, instead.
RedditThe OP and his girlfriend deserved the upgrade to first class. He can afford the comfort, so nobody should be stopping them.
The mother should have been understanding of the OP considering he's a big guy. She should've been happy for her daughter too.
After all, she witnessed her daughter's partner treating her daughter well. Unfortunately, she chose to show an entitled attitude and jealousy.
The next time the OP travels with his girlfriend's family, he should probably just go with business class and then fly first class when it's just the two of them.
That way, he won't have to deal with an MIL who's a jelly belly.
