"A close girlfriend will be staying over one night. Just want to let you know"

Lady Seeks Advice Online As She Is Tired Of Her Roommate Not Wanting Any Overnight Guests In Her Own Home

When you are finally on your own, you want independence, but you might not be able to afford the neighborhood you really want without a roommate. The issue is that even if you only signed a lease with one individual, you occasionally have additional tenants in the form of sporadic or frequent overnight visitors.

Being a roommate is not, in and of itself, a bad thing. In fact, it might even be advantageous because you'll have a built-in friend, and your cost of living will be greatly reduced.

But when you consider all of the diverse behaviors (cos not all of them will be positive) that people have, living with another person or numerous people may be a daunting task. When boyfriends and girlfriends are involved, it gets even worse.

This is not the case in today's story, but it did have to do with guests. The original poster shows her subletting two rooms in her fairly sprawling four-bedroom house.

There is a kitchen, dining room, front room, living room, 3 bathrooms, and lots of outdoor space. Also, there are plenty of nooks and crannies to be alone in if the person wants to.

The OP rented it out to someone who she refers to as J, and according to the OP, J is a nice, quiet person who keeps to themselves. The OP had a problem with J, though; he was always not comfortable with having guests around, even if it was just for a night.

The OP had this to say and she dropped it in the comments:

Spare room has a bed. Guest would stay there. 'couch space' was used as a general term.
I could have been more clear.
For now, we arent having guests. J is moving out soon and I am mentioning this up front from now on.
Before I owned a home, and rented rooms in large run-down houses, occasional house guests were expected just because- well- just because they were.
Thanks everyone for your 2 cents.

Living with a roommate who is in a relationship occasionally can give the impression that you are living with a couple, which is probably not what you expected. The added noise, dishes, fights over the remote, and other trash can be really bothersome but the OP's housemate just didn't want anyone sleeping over.

Redditors agree that this can be a common point of friction between roommates and you can leave your opinions below.
