When living with other people gets a dog, it doesn't mean that they can pawn off the responsibilities of being a dog owner to their roommates or housemates just because they live in the same space. Even family members would make it clear to the person that got the dog that the pooch was their responsibility because well, that's just the fact of it.
Your dog is your responsibility. Sure your roommates or housemates can help here and there but the bulk of the work for the care should still be in your hands.
As it seems, Redditor ralphwiggumdude feels the exact same way about pet ownership especially when it comes to his roommate's dog. Apparently, his roommate left the dog in his care one night with only the task of letting out the dog to poop and pee.
And while OP did just that, he wasn't prepared for the horror that would greet him the next morning. And seeing that he was running late, he didn't have time to clean up so he simply texted his roommate about it.
Now, he's feeling guilty for having left the mess as it is and he's wondering if he's the jerk in the situation. Decide for yourself but first, check out the whole story.
OP asks:
ralphwiggumdudeOP did as he was asked which involved very simple things
ralphwiggumdudeHowever, the dog had an accident and OP didn't have time to handle it so he passed it on to his roommate
ralphwiggumdudeIf we were in OP's position, we would also be feeling guilty for leaving the mess as it is especially since we live in the same house. However, the dog is also the roommate's responsibility.
Also, there's more involved here, especially with how the dog was trained in the house.
People in the comments section seem to understand where OP is coming from. And many people also agree that he did a reasonable amount of care for the pup.
Here are some of the top comments.
1. The dog also needs a lot more training and adjustment so accidents won't happen again
chuckinhoutex2. OP also did a reasonable amount of care especially since he wasn't given any kind of specific instructions
Huge_Industry_12593. The roommate will also know that he wouldn't be able to slack on dog responsibilities just because his roommate is there
Ready-Safe-14894. OP took care of his responsibilities just fine
Queifjay5. OP did what was asked of him
Superdry73And he did what he should have in his position
Superdry736. Plain and simple just like that
xkissmykittyx7. OP didn't expect the accident as well so he wasn't prepared
11treetrunk8. It's still the roommate's responsibility to do training with their pet and make sure they adapt well to changes in situations
winesisAs it seems, OP and the pup weren't that close yet at this point so it would have been understandable for the dog to be uncomfortable to go poop with him and to even feel a little stressed that his owner wasn't around. And OP wasn't prepared for that.
He could've cleaned up the mess but at least he's setting boundaries when it comes to what responsibilities he's willing to share with his roomy with the pup. What do you think?
