It's never a good idea to adopt a dog without first consulting with everyone in the household. Yes, it's nice to sometimes be impulsive and surprise your family with a new puppy, but keep in mind that taking care of a puppy takes a lot of time and effort; your family members might not be ready to take on that role yet. 

To avoid any potential issues, it's better to consult with everyone before taking such a crucial step. Being spontaneous can be good in many scenarios, but definitely not in this one.

A Redditor who goes by the username u/Seesaw_1 made a post on the r/AmItheA**hole subReddit where she explained how her husband recently got a puppy from a breeder without consulting with her first and expected her to take care of him while he's mostly away at work. The user wanted her husband to return the puppy since she couldn't endure the workload linked with caring for a month-old puppy singlehandedly.

Senior dogs are usually much easier to deal with.

Taking care of a puppy is like having another baby.

OP has every right to make that request. She's the one who has to do all the heavy lifting, and the husband can't impose his preferences on her when he's not around most of the time.
