User Sorts Reddit Comments By "Controversial", And Is Surprised By What He Discovered
Don't do the same thing as he did.

Social media is a double-edged sword. When used right, it definitely brings a lot of benefits.
Sadly, it has done more harm than good for a lot of people. An article posted on Forbes even revealed that Reddit, Facebook, and Twitter are platforms bad for people's mental health during the pandemic.
And 57.6% of respondents, who said that they primarily use Reddit to get COVID-19 news, admit that their mental health worsened. Even without looking at the statistics, the toxicity of users on these platforms is apparent.
This is what a user named Redcrux has observed when he browsed through stuff on Reddit. Recently, he opened his social media app and saw nothing but comments from racists and edgelords, basically, the worst kind of people on the internet.
He was so shocked to find out that there are tons of people like this even in the subreddits he frequently visits. It seemed that he had lost faith in humanity.
Until he discovered something. It's the main reason why he's only seeing the worst comments.
Apparently, he sorted one thread by "Controversial," thinking that the setting only applies to it. Little did he know, the setting started applying to all of the threads he visited.
He finally realized the problem and shared his experience on Reddit. Let's see the reaction of his fellow redditors.
The user posted his experienced in the Today I F*cked Up (TIFU) subreddit.

Did he make the same mistake too?

A**holes are not aware that they're indeed a**holes.

Indeed!

A**holes being a**holes.

How to witness Reddit madness. (Warning: Not for the faint of heart.)

Choosing the lesser evil be like...

Never sort by controversial. It's for your own good.

If you're curious, why not? But then again, others would rather bleach their eyeballs.

How to restore faith in humanity on Reddit

Not the top comment, but probably the best advice.

Social media detox

Don't let things that don't directly affect you harm you.

There are good people on Reddit too.

How to avoid the worst comments on Reddit

Every platform will have these things, unfortunately.

Some threads, even if you sorted by best, have controversial comments too.

There are some gold nuggets in here.

A good suggestion

Political discussions are indeed the most controversial because they tend to get heated up. Others tend to avoid it because they're fighting over the same old issues endlessly.

Moral lesson of the story: Don't sort by controversial.
There are plenty of comments you'd rather not read. Because when you're exposed to negativity, your mind starts to think negatively as well.
Reading such comments can also shift your perception or even your behavior. Those toxic comments are among the reasons why people's mental health is affected.
Experts say that negative comments can influence how your day goes. And if it becomes a habit, you might find yourself getting depressed.
If you want to, at least, lessen the toxicity and hatred you see as you browse through Reddit, never use this option. Otherwise, you'll find yourself losing faith in humanity, or even worsening your mental health.
