Pilot Adopts Stray Cat Mid-Flight During Hurricane Evacuation

It’s not every day you hear about a pilot falling in love mid-flight—especially with a furry passenger! Yet, this isn’t your typical love story between two humans; this one’s between a Southwest Airlines pilot and a rescued kitty named Avery.

In the face of Hurricane Milton’s fury, an unexpected bond blossomed high above the clouds, reminding us all of the beautiful surprises life can throw our way, even in the most challenging times.

As nature was gearing up to display its fury in full force, a heartwarming collaboration was also in the works. Southwest Airlines, along with Lucky Dog Animal Rescue and Greater Good Charities, banded together to ensure the safety of over 145 shelter animals.

The plan was to fly them out of harm’s way to more secure ground in Milwaukee. And as the storm drew closer to Florida, quick action was needed to ensure the safety of these vulnerable pets.

Among this furry crew was Avery—a small, feisty kitty with a whole lot of charm. Little did Captain Matt Prebish know, as he piloted this life-saving mission, that Avery would soon become more than just a passenger—she would find a place in his heart and, eventually, in his home.

He quickly called his wife to tell her about Avery, and, as if she had predicted this outcome, his wife readily agreed. “My wife said she knew that when I accepted this trip that I would probably come home with some animal,” he explained.

With her blessing, Matt signed the adoption papers right there in the cockpit. Avery, a shelter cat fleeing a hurricane, had found her forever home and a loving family.
